Where Was This Photo Taken?
Drop a photo. If the file still carries GPS coordinates, you get the place on a map, the nearest city and the date it was taken, all worked out on your device. If it does not, this page will not guess: photos shared through messaging apps and social networks have almost always had the location removed, and no metadata tool can recover it from the pixels. Nothing is uploaded.

About where was this photo taken?
What this page does differently
- Reads GPS from EXIF, XMP and IPTC, and shows it on an offline map with the nearest city and distance; nothing is sent to any map service unless you click a link.
- Says clearly when a file has no location, and why: the sender's app or your phone's picker probably removed it.
- Shows the capture date, camera and any place names stored by editors, which can still narrow things down when GPS is gone.
The photo shows no location. Can you find it anyway?
Not from metadata. WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, X and most email services strip location before delivery, and screenshots never have it. Identifying a place from what is visible in the picture is a different kind of tool (visual geolocation), which this page does not do.
How accurate is the place?
The coordinates are as exact as the phone recorded them, usually within a few metres. The nearest-city label comes from an offline list of larger cities, so it says 'about 12 km from' when the photo was taken outside one.
Is the photo uploaded to find the place?
No. The coordinates are read in your browser and drawn on a map stored on this site. Only the 'Open in Google Maps / Apple Maps / OpenStreetMap' links send the coordinates anywhere, and only when you click them.
Can I remove the location afterwards?
Yes: the Remove location button on each file writes a copy without GPS or place names and keeps everything else.
Limits and privacy
No caps of ours: no file-size limit, no daily count, no account, no watermark. Files never leave your device; the page makes no network request with your images and keeps working offline once loaded. Removal is lossless: metadata blocks are cut out, the picture is never re-encoded, orientation and the colour profile are kept, and the output is read back to prove what is left. Only remove creator and copyright information from images you own or may modify.
