Mic Test

Check that your mic works, how loud you are and how much noise it picks up. Then get OBS noise gate settings from your own voice and room. About 25 seconds. Nothing is uploaded.

Your browser will ask for mic access. Browser processing (auto gain, echo cancellation, noise suppression) is turned off for the test, so it can't change your system mic volume.

Say something · 5 s quiet · read a line · optional quiet voice and typing · results.

About this mic test

How it works

  1. Start and allow mic access. Pick your mic if the wrong one came up.
  2. Say something, stay quiet for five seconds, then read the line at your normal volume.
  3. Optionally say it quietly and type for a few seconds.
  4. Read the result, copy the OBS settings, listen to the recording. Re-test after changes.

What it checks

What level should my mic be?

Loud words should peak between −20 and −9 dBFS, the yellow band on OBS's meter. Lower: raise the input level or move closer. Higher: turn the gain down.

Good OBS noise gate settings

OBS defaults to close −32 dB and open −26 dB. The right values depend on your room: close just above your background noise, open just below your quietest speech. This page measures both. If they're too close together, use Noise Suppression instead.

Why does my Bluetooth headset mic sound bad?

When the mic turns on, Bluetooth headsets switch to a call profile with telephone-quality audio. Use another mic for input and keep the headset for listening.
